Sanju, the 2018 biographical drama on Sanjay Dutt’s life, garnered massive commercial success and widespread attention. With Ranbir Kapoor portraying the titular role and Rajkumar Hirani helming the film, Sanju was praised for its engaging storytelling and stellar performances. However, not everyone from the Dutt family was entirely satisfied with how the story unfolded on screen.

Priya Dutt shares thoughts on brother Sanjay Dutt's biopic Sanju

In a recent conversation with journalist Vickey Lalwani, Sanjay Dutt’s sister Priya Dutt shared her honest thoughts about the film, revealing that she didn’t quite connect with it. According to her, the movie missed out on several crucial elements of Sanjay’s life and instead focused too heavily on just one aspect — him.

"I also felt that the movie didn't do justice to, I think, even my mum in the film, or my father. There is a lot that could have been worked on. There was a lot. Even the relationship between the father and son, the way it was — I think a lot more could have been shown," Priya said.

When asked if she ever considered discussing her concerns with the director, Rajkumar Hirani, she admitted, "I was tempted... But I think they had a different concept in mind. I didn't call him. Their focus was just Sanju, of course, which I get that — and his life. It became a bit of a caricature."

She also reflected on how the film might have compressed too many real-life elements into a narrow narrative. "Maybe they had to amalgamate too many characters. It's not what I expected it to be. I think it was more entertainment... I loved Ranbir Kapoor in it. He played Sanju very well. But yeah, I feel it wasn't really a biopic. It was a film, very entertaining, and included only certain aspects of his life. The intensity was missing."

Priya revealed that when she shared her views with her brother Sanjay Dutt, his response was nonchalant: "Now, what?"

Despite the reservations, Sanju was lauded for its performances, with Ranbir Kapoor’s transformation into Sanjay Dutt receiving critical acclaim. The film also featured a strong supporting cast including Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala, and Dia Mirza.
