Skoda and Volkswagen have issued a massive recall of over 47,000 vehicles manufactured in India after a critical safety defect was found in the rear seatbelt mechanism. The recall affects multiple popular models including the Skoda Slavia, Kushaq, and Kodiaq, as well as the Volkswagen Virtus and Taigun.
What’s the Issue?
According to a statement issued to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), a defect was identified in the rear seatbelt buckle and webbing. In the event of a frontal collision:
- The seatbelt buckle latch plate could break.
- The rear center seatbelt webbing and rear right seatbelt buckle may fail.
This poses a serious risk to passengers seated in the back.

- Skoda Models: Slavia, Kushaq, Kodiaq
- Volkswagen Models: Virtus, Taigun
- Number of Units Recalled:
- Skoda: 25,722 units
- Volkswagen: 21,513 units
- Manufacturing Period: Cars built between 24 May 2024 and 1 April 2025 at the Chakan plant in Maharashtra (for both domestic and export markets).
What Is the Company Doing?
- Free Repairs: The affected seatbelt components will be replaced free of charge.
- Customer Outreach: Authorized service centers are already contacting vehicle owners.
- Self-Check Option: Owners can check if their car is affected using the recall checker tool available on the Skoda India and Volkswagen India websites by entering their VIN (Vehicle Identification Number).

While no injuries have been reported due to the defect, the company has acted proactively after identifying the issue during routine quality tests.
