Balaghat (Madhya Pradesh): Nearly 2,244 pregnant women were reportedly forced to go to private hospitals for delivery. They were admitted to the trauma centre of the district hospital between March last year and April this year.

Sources in the hospital said some Asha workers, in collusion with medical staff, forced them to go to the private health centres. They are reportedly getting money from private hospitals for sending pregnant women to them, sources said.

The irregularity came to light when chief medical and health officer Dr Paresh Uplav inspected the trauma centre on April 19 this year. Dr Uplav sifted through the documents. He came to know 190 pregnant women had to leave the trauma centre in March this year. Nearly 8,351 pregnant women were admitted to the hospital from April last year till January this year.

The officials of the health department said they would act against the guilty. A woman was taken to the trauma centre of the district hospital on December 21 last year.

But because of the absence of a ward boy, they had to take the patient to a private hospital for delivery. A team of the National Quality Assessment Standard inspected the district hospital.

Civil surgeon Dr Nilay Jain said he came to know about such cases through the media. The reality will come to light only after an inquiry, Dr Jain said.
