A nice cold glass of cola goes down a treat, and for many the only correct choice is a , despite many supermarket having their own brands which are much cheaper. Recently, the value options have been put to the test by , and while none of their taste beat the world's favourite brand, there was one that was hailed "as good as the real thing" and better so, it costs significantly less.

Out of major five supermarkets, 's Freeway Cola which costs just 49p for a two-litre bottle or £1.79 for a six-pack of cans comes out on top in the review. Tasters said that the cheap cola is a great alternative for those looking for a cheaper beverage that tastes just as nice.

ranked five different own brands and Lidl's Freeway Cola was rated an impressive 4.5 out of five and was even said to taste extremely similar to Coca-Cola.

"We didn't do this as a blind test, but honestly I fully believe that if someone handed me a glass of this and didn't tell me it wasn't Coke, I might not have even realised. It was pretty much as good as the real thing," the reviewer said.

As good as the cheap cola is, there was one thing that held it back.

The reporter added: "There's not a sharpness to the fizz that you get with actual Coke. But for 49p, I reckon I could live it."

The budget supermarket is certainly confident enough in their cola, with them even launching their own rival Christmas Cola Truck last year.

Sainsbury's cola was praised as a good cheaper alternative priced at 70p for a two-litre bottle. But it was said that you can still definitely taste the difference.

Aldi's Vive cola, costing £1.69 for a six-pack of 330ml, was ranked the lowest with a rating of two out of five. The drink was described as being fizzy to start with but quickly going flat. It also tastes and smells sweeter than Coca Cola, so for those who like a "sugary fix" this could be the one.
