The One Show host Alex Jones fought back tears over a "moving" moment live on Monday night (May 5).

During tonight's instalment of the hit BBC programme, Alex and her co-host Roman Kemp presented a special hour-long episode to commemorate VE Day.

Victory in Europe Day celebrates the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Germany's unconditional surrender of its armed forces on May 8, 1945.

Tonight's episode of The One Show saw Sophie Raworth share details of the week's events, while Al Murray met the 110-year-old veteran who is Britain's oldest man.

Plus, Brian Conley went behind the scenes at the historic Gorleston Pavilion Theatre in Norfolk, which will host a VE Day 80th anniversary show later this week.

Elsewhere in the episode, Alex and Roman were joined in the studio by Eirwen, whose father Lloyd was serving in the Royal Artillery while her mother was pregnant with her in 1944.

"The BBC has been working closely with the Imperial War Museum to tell your VE Day stories by asking people to share their World War II letters written by loved ones," Roman began.

Eirwen then read an extract of a letter that her father had written to her mother in the event that he passed away at war.

"This seems a very strange letter to write, there seems to be so much I'm needed for," Eirwen read.

"Firstly, of course, you, because you my angel are always first in my thoughts and when I do go into battle, it will be with your name on my lips and your memory inspiring me to fight.

"Then there is Eirwen, I do so much want to see the child and be a real father. Although there are many miles between us physically, I feel that you are straining every nerve to be near me in spirit.

"I need you my sweetheart, and I'm just an ordinary chap there with the gloves on. Don't grieve for me, my darling but look after Eirwen and bring the child up to be as fine a person as its mother."

A tearful Eirwen then concluded: "So sweetheart, for the last time I will say goodnight my darling, be good and god bless you."

Alex, who was also left visibly emotional, then said: "Thank you, thank you for sharing that. It's so moving, isn't it?"

Roman added: "Eirwen, thank you so much for sharing that. It is such a moving letter. Many soldiers obviously didn't return, but there is good news."

The hosts then revealed that Eirwen's father survived the war and wrote her a letter after she was born, which she has since shared with the Imperial War Museum.
