Rain Halts IPL Clash in Hyderabad

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], May 5: Continuous rainfall in Hyderabad dashed Sunrisers Hyderabad's (SRH) hopes of advancing to the playoffs during their Indian Premier League 2025 match on Monday.

The 55th match of the 18th season between the Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium was abandoned due to a soggy outfield.

Heavy rain began shortly after the Delhi Capitals concluded their innings, which had already seen some light drizzle.

The IPL announced on X that the match was called off, stating, “Match 55 between @SunRisers and @DelhiCapitals has been called off due to wet outfield. Both teams share a point each.”

This outcome meant both teams received one point, but Hyderabad needed a win to keep their playoff aspirations alive, facing a modest target of 134 runs.

Delhi still has a chance to qualify for the playoffs in their upcoming matches, currently holding 13 points from 11 games, while Hyderabad, with only seven points from 11 matches, became the third team to be eliminated, following Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals.

Before the rain interrupted the game, SRH captain Pat Cummins won the toss and chose to bowl first. The opening pair of Karun Nair and Faf du Plessis took to the crease for the Capitals.

However, the Delhi team did not start well, as their top order crumbled during the powerplay.

Nair (0), Du Plessis (3), Abhishek Porel (8), and Axar Patel (6) all fell cheaply, leaving the team struggling.

At the end of the powerplay (6 overs), Delhi was at 26/4, with KL Rahul (8*) and Tristan Stubbs (0*) remaining at the crease.

In the eighth over, KL Rahul (10 runs off 14 balls) was dismissed by left-arm fast bowler Jaydev Unadkat, edging the ball to wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan.

Delhi reached the 50-run mark in the 11th over. After losing five quick wickets, Stubbs and Vipraj Nigam (18 runs from 17 balls) formed a brief partnership of 32 runs before Nigam was run out in the 13th over, leaving the score at 62.

Following Nigam's exit, Ashutosh Sharma joined Stubbs as an impact player.

Both managed to stabilize the innings, with DC surpassing the 100-run mark in the 17th over, thanks to a boundary from Ashutosh off Unadkat.

Stubbs and Ashutosh achieved a 50-run partnership in the 18th over, with Stubbs hitting a boundary off right-arm bowler Eshan Malinga.

Ashutosh Sharma (41 runs off 26 balls) was dismissed in the 20th over by Eshan Malinga.

The Capitals concluded their innings at 133 runs for the loss of seven wickets, with Stubbs (41* runs in 36 balls) and Mitchell Starc (1*) remaining not out.

For Hyderabad, Pat Cummins was the standout bowler, taking three wickets for just 19 runs in his four overs.

Jaydev Unadkat (1/13), Eshan Malinga (1/28), and Harshal Patel (1/36) each claimed a wicket in their respective four-over spells.
