A man has been stabbed to death at a city centre Lloyds Bank, sparking a .

The victim, who was a customer, was assaulted inside the bank in St Peter's Street, Derby, at about 2:35pm today. The man, understood to be in his 30s, at the scene. While formal identification has not taken place, his family have been made aware. A Derbyshire Constabulary spokesperson said: "A significant police presence remains in the city centre and will do for some time to come." The street was cordoned off by officers as well as the nearby East Street.

An air ambulance was seen landing close to Derby Cathedral after police were alerted to the attack in the bank branch. Members of the public were asked to avoid the area this evening.

Traffic congestion was seen affecting movement into and out of Derby. The AA's live traffic map showed delays around the centre of Derby around rush hour.

Images taken at the scene show police standing in the cordoned off street with ambulances being spotted close to the bank. People were also seen hanging around the scene on Peter's Street despite having been told to stay away.

affiliate said Lloyds Bank shared a statement about the incident: "We are deeply saddened by the incident at our Derby branch and our thoughts are with those affected. We are supporting our colleagues during this difficult time and will co-operate closely with the police."
