The toss has been delayed by rain in the crucial  (Indian Premier League) fixture between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on 8 May. This is set to be the first meeting between these two sides in the ongoing edition of the IPL.

This is an important encounter in the context of the league as the tournament has reached its business end. While both teams are in with a chance to progress to the playoff stage of the competition, others in contention will also have their eyes on this fixture.

What will happen if the match is washed out?

The toss was scheduled to take place at 7:00 PM (IST). However, steady rain meant that the ground was under covers, and the coin flip had to be indefinitely postponed. While the latest reports from the ground suggest that the rain is easing up, the ground staff will need a considerable amount of time to get the venue ready for the match to commence.

As per IPL playing conditions, a fixture starting at 7:30 PM (IST) is expected to end by 10:50 PM (IST). An extra 60 minutes is allotted to accommodate any delays. This makes the cut-off time for a five-over match approximately 11:50 PM (IST). In case the match gets abandoned, both DC and PBKS will receive one point each.

Could both teams' tournament hopes be affected by a washout?

Yes, both teams would be affected in the event of a washout. PBKS, who have 15 points from 11 matches, would equal the leaders, Gujarat Titans (GT) and the second-placed Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), with 16 points. However, Shreyas Iyer's men would have played one game more than GT and RCB.

Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals have 13 points from 11 matches. Their most recent fixture was washed out in Hyderabad. If the clash against PBKS also gets abandoned, DC would move to 14 points from 12 games. In the event of a washout, both teams would remain in their respective positions on the points table.
