If you're looking for a potential bargain in your next family , a commuter market town could be the place for you. With an average three-bedroom home costing an appealing £136,900, Glenrothes in Fife, Scotland, has been crowned the 's most popular affordable town for families.
Glenrothes, surrounded by beautiful countryside, claimed first place in the popularity-affordability table following new research by property company Zoopla. The town has a population of less than 40,000 but boasts plenty of local amenities and is an hour from making it a good fit for commuters. But it's Glenrothes' value for money that makes it an ideal location to raise a family.
Average monthly payments for a three-bedroom home in the town is £540 - less than half the reported national average (£1,202).
Furthermore, while a three-bed property in Glenrothes on average costs £136,900, some currently on the market are up for sale for less than £100,000. A quick look on Zoopla turns up multiple properties with a far lower auction guide price but for a top three-bedroom home, the cheapest is listed for £99,995.
Glenrothes fought off some fierce competition to take the title, with all of the towns in the top 10 located in Scotland and , except for Dartford and Swanley in Kent, .

It comes as a survey Zoopla found more than a third (34%) of adults fear being priced out of their ideal family home location.
For the 40% of those prepared to moving, the primary motivation is securing more space without increasing their budget which Zoopla says indicates a clear trade-off for affordability.

"Our analysis identified the most affordable areas for families seeking value for money. What's particularly telling is the level of buyer interest these towns are attracting; three-bedroom homes in the most popular affordable locations are seeing twice the amount of listing views compared to the regional average.
"This heightened popularity, coupled with the significant portion of would-be buyers expressing concerns about being priced out of housing, underscores the ongoing challenges facing movers and the clear appetite for value."
Zoopla also reports that of the people it surveyed, 37% said the would be happy to move to an entirely new region in the to purchase a more affordable family home.
