Mumbai: Many people are wondering: Will banks be closed on Saturday, May 17? The answer is no — banks will remain open across India this Saturday. That’s because May 17 falls on the third Saturday, which is a regular working day for banks.

As per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, banks are closed only on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month, along with all Sundays. Since May has five Saturdays, this means that May 24 (the fourth Saturday) will be a holiday, but May 17 and May 31 will be working days.

Last week, many banks observed an extended holiday due to Buddha Purnima. However, there are no such closures this weekend. Customers planning to visit the bank can do so on May 17 without any issue.

Even when banks are closed, digital banking services such as mobile apps, internet banking, and ATMs stay active. Customers can use these tools for balance checks, fund transfers, and other basic services anytime.

Here’s a quick look at other bank holidays in May:

May 1: Labour Day in several states

May 9: Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti (West Bengal)

May 12: Buddha Purnima (multiple states)

May 16: Sikkim State Day

May 26: Kazi Nazrul Islam’s Birth Anniversary (Tripura)

May 29: Maharana Pratap Jayanti (Himachal Pradesh)

These are regional holidays, so bank closures vary by location. Always confirm with your local branch before planning a visit.
