Born in Delhi, Malhotra completed his early education in India before pursuing a degree in civil engineering from BITS Pilani, Rajasthan. At the age of 22 he moved to Canada in 1971 with hopes of building a better future. Starting out in an engineering firm, he soon found himself working with the City of Ottawa where he served as the chief structural engineer from 1977 to 1986. It was during this time that he developed a deep understanding of urban planning and housing needs, insights that would later fuel his entrepreneurial rise.
In 1986 Malhotra launched Claridge Homes, a venture that would become one of Ottawa’s most influential real estate development firms. Claridge has since built over 14,000 properties ranging from high-rise condominiums to family homes and retirement residences. Among its most notable achievements is the Claridge Icon, a towering 469 foot structure that remains the tallest building in Ottawa. This ambitious project stands as a symbol of Malhotra’s impact on the city’s architectural and economic landscape.
But Malhotra’s influence goes beyond bricks and mortar. He is also a key figure in the community, contributing to local development and even owning a stake in the Ottawa Senators hockey team. His approach to business and philanthropy is shaped by values passed down through generations. As his brother Shawn once put it, “When you’re a Malhotra, work is your middle name.” The name Claridge itself carries personal significance for Bill as it was inspired by a hotel in New Delhi where he and his father shared fond memories during his childhood.
Today Malhotra’s legacy is secured not only by his billion dollar fortune but also by his enduring contributions to Canadian society. Ranked number 1625 on Forbes 2025 list of global billionaires, he continues to lead Claridge Homes as founder and CEO, with his sons Neil and Shawn serving as minority owners. As real estate challenges grow across Canada, the story of Bill Malhotra remains a powerful reminder of how vision and perseverance can transform cities and lives.
