In a heartbreaking incident in the Kalyan area of Thane district, six individuals lost their lives due to the collapse of a building slab. Authorities reported the arrest of a flat owner on charges of conducting illegal construction work.
According to police reports, the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when flooring work was being carried out on the fourth floor of the Saptashrungi building, leading to the slab's failure and subsequent fall. Among the deceased was a two-year-old girl, while six others sustained injuries.
Senior Inspector Ganesh Nahade from the Kolsewadi police station confirmed the arrest of Krishna Lalchand Chaurasia (40), the resident of flat number 401, on Tuesday night. He has been charged under sections 105 and 125 of the Indian Penal Code, as well as the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act of 1966.
An official stated, 'Chaurasia undertook flooring work without obtaining the necessary permissions from the relevant authorities. The investigation into the matter is ongoing.' Vishwas Gujar, the sub-divisional officer of Kalyan, mentioned that the building is now deemed uninhabitable and will be demolished.
This 30-year-old structure is located in a densely populated area of Kalyan (East) and was not listed among buildings declared unsafe for habitation.
