Nationwide Building Society has issued an update after a customer reported see suspicious activity on their account statement.

The person contacted the group over social media claiming they had cancelled their card after noticing a payment for something they had "never done", for a Ring doorbell subcription.

They went on to say that some £130 had been taken out of their account and that they would contact their local branch about the matter.

Nationwide said in response: "If you believe there is a fraudulent transaction on your account, you will need to report this to us.

"Please call us on 03457 30 20 11, the lines are open today until 8pm and a member of our dedicated team will be able to assist you further."

Nationwide was asked what the general advice is if you notice a suspicious payment on your account that you don't recognise. A spokesperon said: "If someone notices a suspicious payment, they should call their bank or building society immediately.

"Whether it is an email asking for personal information or for you to click a link, report it as we have a team available 24/7 dedicated to fraud for this very reason."

The group also shared some tips for keeping your bank accounts secure: "When it comes to keeping your bank accounts safe, the best advice is to shred old financial paperwork such as bills and banks statements while changing your passwords regularly and not writing them down. Lastly, keep an eye on your bank statements to spot and report any fraud sooner rather than later."

Nationwide customers may also want to check their accounts the building society recently completed paying out a £50 bonus payment to millions of members.

The thank you payment was sent out to over 12 million customers, after the group finished its acquisition of Virgin Money.

All payments have now been issued, going out as either payments into bank account or as cheques. To qualify, you need to have been a Nationwide member on September 30, 2024, and still be a customer with the group when the payment is issued.

You also need to in the 12 months to the end of September 2024 either:

  • Had at least one qualifying transaction on your Nationwide current account or savings account
  • Had at least £100 in total in one or more of your Nationwide current accounts and savings accounts
  • Owed at least £100 in total on one or more Nationwide residential mortgages.

You will also be eligible for the payment if you completed a switch to any Nationwide current account, between July 1 and September 30, 2024, using the Current Account Switch Service.
