Lund University has successfully completed a historic recruitment drive, hiring a record-breaking 42 new research group leaders to its Faculty of Medicine. This massive, two-year initiative was designed to attract the world’s brightest scientific minds and solidify the university’s position as a global leader in life sciences.

The effort drew extraordinary international interest, with over 1,100 applications submitted from researchers across the globe. According to Kristina Åkesson, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, the goal was to find exceptional talent with the potential to make significant scientific breakthroughs.

To attract this caliber of researcher, the university offered a highly competitive fellowship package.

This includes funding for the group leader’s salary, research materials, and salaries for two PhD students, providing a strong foundation for them to establish their labs and launch ambitious projects.

The new hires will focus on the university’s key strategic areas, including cancer, diabetes, neuroscience, and regenerative medicine. By bringing in a diverse group of international experts, Lund University aims to create a dynamic, collaborative environment. This “critical mass” of talent is expected to foster innovation, spark new interdisciplinary projects, and significantly advance medical research for years to come.

This landmark investment not only provides a major boost to the university’s research capabilities but also strengthens the entire life science ecosystem in the region.
