Following the box office success of Saiyaara, conversations around a potential sequel are gaining momentum. Fans are especially curious about the future of antagonist Mahesh Iyer, portrayed by Shaan R Grover, whose character arc left many questions unanswered.
While Saiyaara wrapped up with a fairytale ending for Krish Kapoor (Ahaan Panday) and Vaani Batra (Aneet Padda), Mahesh Iyer's abrupt exit has sparked curiosity online. In a recent interview with Zoom, Shaan R Grover addressed the growing buzz around Saiyaara 2.
Shaan didn’t shy away from admitting the unfinished business around Mahesh Iyer. “As far as my character is concerned, a lot can be done later. Mahesh just vanished; it was abrupt," he stated. He also shared a possible plotline that could bring Mahesh back into the story: “Maybe it can be explored if these characters decide to go on a different journey. What if Vaani wants to meet Mahesh one last time, that could be a different character arc for Krish.”
He clarified that nothing is confirmed yet: “There are no talks for the sequel right now. It depends on YRF and Mohit Suri.”
Shaan went on to speak about the behind-the-scenes work that went into building the emotionally layered relationship between Mahesh and Vaani. “Aneet and I had chemistry workshops. They were for us to bond with each other,” he revealed. “When we have rehearsed, those scenes flow easily. For the backstory in the original script I had read, we had dated for five years and that’s a long relationship.”
He explained that the preparation helped make the history between their characters feel authentic on-screen. Reflecting on his role, Shaan shared that portraying Mahesh wasn’t emotionally easy. “Of course, it is not easy to play such characters. I am not Mahesh Iyer. That’s not how I function,” he clarified. He even shared how a close friend reacted strongly to Aneet’s performance. “A friend of mine experienced something similar and couldn’t stop crying while watching Aneet’s performance,” he said. “Her 7-year-long relationship broke because her partner didn’t want to marry and then ghosted her. That’s when I realised that people like Mahesh do exist.”
Since its release on July 18, Saiyaara has stormed the box office with earnings of over ₹150 crore, establishing itself as a major hit for Yash Raj Films and director Mohit Suri. The AI-generated fan art of Krish and Vaani as parents circulating on social media is only intensifying fans' hopes for a sequel.
