Upi new rules: UPI payment has become an important part of our life. Everyone uses online payment everywhere. Nowadays, if you want to buy vegetables or eat food outside, just scan the QR code and quickly pay. Till now this work used to be done for free and every person in the country started using it. But now this facility may not be as ‘free’ as we think. Actually, the country’s largest private bank ICICI Bank has taken a big decision. Yes, since 1 August 2025, it has been announced to impose processing fees on some UPI transactions. Earlier, Yes Bank and Axis Bank have also taken similar steps. But don’t panic! This charge will be applied not directly to the common customers, but to payment aggregators i.e. razorpay, payu, cashfree. That is, when you pay on a restaurant, e-commerce site or food delivery app, you have to pay extra on it.

These people will have to pay fees

According to the ICICI Bank, payment aggregators are divided into two categories – those who have an Escro account in ICICI Bank, they will have to pay a fee of 0.02%per transaction, maximum ₹ 6. At the same time, those who do not have an account with ICICI bank, will have to pay a fee of 0.04%per transaction, maximum ₹ 10. However, no charge of any kind will be taken from the traders who have current accounts in the bank.

Because of this decision taken

Banks argue that they cost a certain cost in the processing of every UPI transaction, which they were carrying out till now. The transaction fee also has to be charged by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Therefore, banks are now taking steps towards recovery of this expenditure. Recently, the RBI Governor also said that it is not possible to keep UPI completely free for a long time and for this a durable model is necessary.
