EPFO Service: The Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has made it mandatory for its members to activate its universal account number (UAN) from 7 August using UMANG mobile app. This can only be done through Aadhaar -linked face authentication process. This

EPFO services without activation will not be available to users. EPFO has made this change to make the process simplified and completely digital for members. Uan generating and activation can now be completed through the UMANG app, which is available on Android and iOS.

Meaning of change

Aadhaar-based face authentication has to be used to complete this process. This change means that users no longer need the help of their employer to activate their UAN. According to EPFO, this step will improve accuracy and reduce the delay. This also ensures that users have complete control over their provident fund account. This requirement will be applicable from August 1, 2025.

How to activate?

  • Download Umang App to users to activate UAN
  • In the app, select EPFO option
  • Then choose “UAN allocation and activation”
  • Enter your Aadhaar number and mobile number
  • Then give your consent to verify your information.

You will get a one-time password (OTP) on your Aadhaar mobile number. After entering it with you Face authentication Will be asked to complete. If the system does not get any existing UAN, a new UAN will be created. After being verified, your UAN and a temporary password will be sent through SMS.

This method works for the first time users and those who already have an existing UAN that has not yet been active. UN cards can also be downloaded digitally through user app.

Why is this important for employees

So far many employees have been dependent on their employees to set and activate their UAN. This has often led to decrease in delay, wrong entry and EPFO benefits. The report states that only about 35% of the allocated UAN was activated by the members themselves.

By activating the UAN directly through the enthusiasm, users can avoid paperwork and get full access to services such as checking their EPF balance, updating KYC details, submitting claims and downloading their UAN card. It also helps to ensure a rapid process of benefits such as pension withdrawal and transfer.

What to do next

If you have not yet activated your UAN, now you have to use the Umang app to do it. Without activation, EPFO services such as balance checks, claim conditions or passbook access will be closed.
