The water level at Morbe Dam in Navi Mumbai has gone down even further compared to last year, which has increased the possibility of water crisis. As of 7 August 2024, the dam is only 11.73%, compared to 12.23% in the same period last year. This year the filler level of the dam is at 81.21%, which shows a significant decrease compared to the last two years.
The municipal administration has appealed to citizens to make prudent use of water in view of the decline in water availability. After the Narali Purnima, there was a huge decrease in rainfall in August due to the decrease in the intensity of rain, while the rainfall was normal in June and July. This deficiency has a direct impact on the water reserves of Morbe Dam.
The maximum capacity of Morbe Dam is 88 meters, but currently the water level has reached only 84.27 meters. This is about two meters less than the previous year, when the water level was 86.47%. According to the administration, the water supply can run till 21 April 2026 on the basis of the current water level, although the level of the motiyas reservoir has also decreased this year. Officials have asked the citizens to use water very carefully, as this year’s level is clearly lower than the previous year and the main reason is the lack of rain in the month of August.
According to the report of 10 August 2025, there has been a decrease in the waterlogans of several reservoirs including the upper vaitarana and Bhatsa. Some drainage activities were stopped due to irregularities of rainfall in the upper Vaitarana reservoir and some were changed.
It is clear from these figures that there is a tendency to decline in waterlogging in the entire region including Navi Mumbai. In such a situation, in view of the changing weather and rain pattern, it has become mandatory to give priority to water management and water conservation.
