Despite being someone who doesn't tend to snack a lot, when I go through my phases of cravings, there's no in between. It's either nothing or a whole pack of something, and when it comes to biscuits, I'll often struggle to have just the one - something I'm sure many people can relate to. When it comes to biscuits, you won't meet many people who aren't a fan of a classic rich tea biscuit, and of course, it's the ultimate choice if you're looking to enjoy something with a brew.

I was once one of those who believed the more expensive an item is, the better, and so when it came to shopping, I'd typically pick up the big brands over supermarket labels. However, over the years, shopping mistakes and cost changes opened my eyes to the fact that sometimes supermarkets' own taste fairly similar and on some occasions even better than the big labels, and so to fulfil my recent phase of biscuit craving, I decided to compare Marks and Spencer's, Sainsbury's, Lidl's, Asda's and Tesco's versions of rich tea biscuits to a classic McVitie's one.

This one caught me by surprise. I wasn't a fan of it at all. It was really bland and dry compared to the other ones I tested. This next point comes down to preference, but for me it was way too soggy when I dunked it into my tea, which I didn't like. It really made the texture off-putting afterwards.

Sainsbury's ones for me weren't bad or good; they were almost tasteless. This is a good option for those who want to enjoy multiple biscuits but get that sickly sensation easily, similar to those who aren't a fan of sweet treats as this one wasn't as sweet at others. But, overall, it was a bit bland, so it's not necessarily the one for me.

Tesco's ones weren't the greatest either for similar reasons to the M&S ones. They had a stronger taste than the Sainsbury's ones, but they were slightly bland and dry compared to the others I tried, and, again, the sogginess after one dunk was too much for me.

Of course, the tea is going to soften the biscuit a bit, but just like M&S's version, these Tesco ones couldn't hack the brew compared to the others.

I didn't expect to like the Lidl version as much as I did, but then again, it didn't surprise me, as Lidl's quality has come a long way over the years. It's Tower Gate rich tea biscuits had a delicious, nice and sweet taste, and a great crunch that even dipped into the tea; you could still enjoy a bit of bite.

The only thing that set it back a bit was the lingering, mushy texture, which I didn't say I got with any of the others. However, considering the price point and taste, I would definitely purchase a packet again.

Is there much needed to say? McVities is going strong. They had the perfect crunch and texture. Came out strong after being dunked in my tea; there were no issues with it at all. The only reason it wasn't the top was that the winning version was more than half the price of this packet.

The best rich tea biscuits for me were Asda's ones. I honestly couldn't fault it; they were absolutely delicious, had a nice bite, and dunked well into the tea. While all the biscuits went well with a cuppa, the Asda biscuits were the only ones that genuinely made me think 'these taste so good' after my dunked bite. I also went back for a couple more because I enjoyed them so much, which I didn't do with the others.

And to top it all off, the biscuits are only 60p, which is less than half the price of the McVitie's pack I picked up from the store.
