Hyderabad: The widely used UPI platform Google Pay, popularly known as GPay, has begun charging convenience fees for certain payments made using credit and debit cards.

The charges are imposed on bill payments such as electricity and gas bills made using the platform. The fee ranges from 0.5% to 1% plus GST.

The UPI platform’s move came after other platforms such as PhonePe and Paytm had introduced the convenience fee for the same. Earlier the platform did not charge for low-value transactions.

Though the sudden change has sparked debate, Google Pay’s website, however, specifies that the convenience fee only applies to card payments. The UPI transactions linked directly to bank accounts still remain free.
