Everybody knows how important it is to our bedding regularly to get rid of germs and promote better sleep.

According to most sleep experts, putting your sheets in the washing machine around once a week is key, although if you've got pets or allergies then you might have to do it more often.

But when it comes to your pillows, it's also really important to run these through a laundry cycle from time to time in order to keep them fresh.

According to influencer Jack Designs on , who boasts more than 1.4 million followers, you should be doing this once a year.

He's shared an easy guide on exactly how to do this, pinpointing the 'most important' step that nobody should forget.

In a recent video, he said: "This is a reminder to wash your pillows. It's recommended you wash your pillows every year."

He then admitted he hadn't done his in five years - but after washing them, he said they felt 'brand new'.

Here's everything you need to know if you want your pillows to feel fresh and clean again.

How to wash your pillows

First, you'll want to make sure you're using a mild detergent along with a laundry sanitiser for the best results.

Armed with his cleaning products, Jack then explained that you must clean your pillows on a 30 degree wash.

Putting them in the machine, he said: "I'm doing two at the same time to balance out the drum."

Add in the laundry products as normal and get the cycle going. Afterwards, take out your pillows and give them a good shake to redistribute the filling, before popping them in the tumble dryer.

Add in a couple of dryer balls, which are great for keeping your pillows soft and fluffy, and take them out a few times during the cycle to shake them around.

Jack added: "The most important thing is your dry them properly - some pillows can only be air dried, so wait till summer if that's the case."

The comments were full of people thanking Jack for his advice, with one person writing: "Thanks for the tip!! Never actually washed my pillows but makes sense."

Another said: "Wash mine in summer always, I've noticed they dry up faster than winter."
