Mughal Emperor Jahandar Shah: The generations after Aurangzeb led the Mughals towards ruin. There were some emperors whose debauchery and stupidity brought disrepute to the Mughal legacy in history. Due to these acts, historians called them 'licentious fool' Mughals.

Mughal emperors ruled India from Babur to Aurangzeb. Many of these Mughal emperors were extremely cruel. Although the Mughals built many magnificent buildings in India, which are still present today, the generations after Aurangzeb led the Mughals to ruin. There were some emperors whose debauchery and stupidity made them infamous in history and ruined the Mughal legacy. 

The name of this Mughal emperor was Jahandar Shah, whom historians have addressed as 'licentious fool' Mughal.

This ruler was known for his colourful temperament and strange antics.

Could not rule even for 1 year

Jahandar Shah was the son of Emperor Bahadur Shah I and grandson of Emperor Aurangzeb. Jahandar defeated his brothers and captured the Mughal throne after the death of his father Bahadur Shah I in 1712. However, his reign lasted only 9 months. His infamous debauchery kept him away from power.

The king got trapped in the love of Lal Kunwar

Jahandar Shah, who was always immersed in sensual pleasures, lived a life of luxury and debauchery.

It is said that he was fond of alcohol and dance since childhood and these habits continued during his reign as well, due to which the Mughal legacy weakened. According to historians, Jahandar Shah saw a courtesan Lal Kunwar dancing in the court and made her his Begum. The special thing was that Lal Kunwar was almost twice the age of Jahandar Shah.

The eyes of the sons were gouged out

Jahandar Shah gave the title of 'Imtiaz Mahal' to Lal Kunwar and Lal Kunwar ruled the court. He appointed his relatives to high positions. Jahandar Shah obeyed everything she said.

Let us tell you that Lal Kunwar did not like Jahandar Shah's own sons even a bit. He decided to remove them from the way. He persuaded him to put his two sons in prison by gouging out their eyes. On the insistence of Lal Kunwar, Jahandar Shah got his two sons' eyes gouged out and put them in prison.

Used to reach the court naked 

Jahandar Shah is known for his eccentricities and foolish acts. Sometimes he would come to the court wearing women's clothes after getting drunk, and sometimes he would sit on the throne naked. 

Murder in prison

Jahandar could remain on the throne of the Mughal Empire for only 9 months. In fact, in 1713, his nephew Farrukhsiyar opened a front against him. On 6 January 1713, Farrukhsiyar defeated him and captured power. The defeated Jahandar tried to escape with Shah Lal Kunwar and take refuge in Delhi, but he was captured. Later he was brutally murdered in prison.
