I never thought I would be a porridge girly, but I am. I usually opt for the microwaveable packs with a spoon of peanut butter, a sliced banana and some chia seeds for added fibre.
But Horlicks, yes the company behind the hot, malty drinks we associate with bedtime, sent me some of their new malted porridge clusters to try. Made of baked clusters of jumbo oats, they are coated with the flavour of Horlicks. The 400g boxes are now at Morrisons stores nationwide and online, usually for £3.50, or currently on offer for £2.50.
It comes with a very simple cooking guide, and instantly, I realised it was going to be a little more labour-intensive than my usual breakfast as this needs to be cooked on the stove.
I weighed out 50g of the malted porridge, which didn't look like much, but I know how filling porridge can be, especially when it is made with milk as I usually use water.
It calls for 240ml of milk and you simply add to a pan with the clusters and bring to a boil, stirring all the time until it is at your desired thickness.
This was quicker than the 10 minutes it stated on the box, which I was happy about and when I spooned it in to the bowl, it looked like a tiny breakfast, but this kept me full for hours.
It was creamy and had a lovely warming malty flavour. The clusters, while they did combine in the cooking process, they still had a little bite to them, giving the porridge a good texture that wasn't mushy.
After a few bites, I did add a sprinkle of sugar to the top of mine and the flavour reminded me warm Weetabix, in a good way.
One bowl made with semi-skimmed milk as instructed has 303 calories, 6.7g of fat, 46.4g of carbs, 3.4g of fibre and 12.6g of protein. You can get the Horlicks Malted Porridge in Morrisons stores and online now.
