A high-street jeweller with 89 stores will Beaverbrooks, which has been on the high street since 1919 and employs around 1,200 people, confirmed it will shut five stores in England and two stores in Scotland following a business performance review.

The Scottish sites will be the first to go, with its East Kilbride and branch set to close this Sunday, March 16. This will be followed by two closures next Sunday, March 23, in Birmingham Fort and High Wycombe. Its Huddersfield store will close on April 5, and finally, the Croydon and Sutton Coldfield branches will be the last to go on April 6. Managing director Anna Blackburn told The Sun: "Due to a range of factors, there are seven stores that are unfortunately no longer commercially viable, and after careful and thorough consideration we have made the difficult decision to close them."

She added: "At Beaverbrooks we pride ourselves on our people-first culture and open, honest relationships with our colleagues. Our directors delivered the news in person to each team member.

"We aim to retain as many colleagues as possible within other Beaverbrooks stores or the wider business and are working closely with each individual affected to provide them with options for their specific needs, supporting them with their next steps, whatever they may be."

It follows the closure of a Beaverbooks store in Romford last March, however a new store will open in Harrograte this Spring.

The Centre for Retail Research reported . In 2023, the high street lost 10,500 shops, and over these two years, reportedly 250,000 retail jobs were also lost.
