Thousands of across the UK are being caught out by AI-powered cameras. The new technology was introduced in 2021 and recent numbers show the new technology has already caught over 2,300 motorists. According to new data from , speeding fines have surged by 14% in this time. However, drivers have also been caught out for mobile phone use and seatbelt violations.

Five police forces in the UK, including Durham, Humberside, Metropolitan Police, North Wales and Staffordshire, currently have AI cameras in place. Meanwhile, Avon and Somerset and Devon and Cornwall are set to roll them out soon. AI road cameras can detect speeding, identify drivers using mobile phones, monitor the number of passengers in a vehicle and identify those not wearing seatbelts. Police hope the advanced technology will help improve road safety across the UK.

Since they were introduced in 2021, the AI cameras have detected 951 offences in Durham, 882 in Humberside, 455 in Staffordshire and 53 in North Wales.

However, research shows that one in five drivers think the use of AI cameras is an invasion of their privacy in their car. They're also worried that the technology might catch drivers incorrectly.

Meanwhile, more than one in 10 drivers said they're less likely to use a mobile phone while driving now because of the AI speed cameras. These people said they feel they could be caught by an AI speed camera more easily than by other cameras. A further one in 10 said the same about not wearing a seatbelt.

Rhydian Jones, Confused.com car insurance expert, said: "Our latest research found that over 9 million drivers have been caught speeding in the last 3 years. That's as the number of speeding fines in 2024 14% higher than those caught in 2022. But speeding isn't the only issue, as distractions like mobile phones cause dangerous driving too.

"That's why the piloting of AI speed cameras is a step in the right direction to improve road safety. The technology can spot drivers and passengers not wearing a seatbelt or using their phone behind the wheel. The hope is that this will really help to crack down on drivers who risk the safety of themselves and other road users when behind the wheel.
