BBC Sport has offered the majority of its staff ‘accelerated voluntary redundancy’ as it seeks to place a higher emphasis on their digital content.

The details of the proposal, which is set to come into effect this summer, will see Sportsday come at an end. A number of other presenting roles are set to be axed, with the broadcaster aiming to close 27 roles.

The are then aiming to create 27 different roles as they bid to move away from traditional sports news coverage in order to produce more reactive stories via streaming and, according to a new report from .

The plans were unveiled at a meeting on Wednesday, it is claimed, and will also see the number of sports bulletins cut.

It's believed three presenters and two correspondents are likely to be made redundant with producers also set to be affected as part of the plans, though 'the majority' of BBC Sport staff will be able to voluntary redundancy.

The report claims the BBC's director of sport, Alex Kay-Jelski, is behind the directive. He is said to have led the meeting at MediaCity in Salford.

"It feels like they are killing sports news on television,’ a source told the report. "Those involved are distraught. It came as a shock and it’s fair to say that none of them saw it coming. They’re basically decimating the output of sports news on television."

Sportsday has been a fixture of BBC programming since its inception in 2001. It is shown 12 times daily and twice on the weekends. It's also said that there will only be one sports bulletin on the BBC’s news channel during the day - at 1.30pm- before another right at the end of the day at around 11.45pm.

Significant changes to the BBC's flagship football highlights show, Match of the Day, have already been confirmed with stepping down at the end of the season. He will be replaced by a trio of presenters who will share hosting duties: Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan.
