has suggested that "heavy congestion is almost inevitable" on Britain's busiest motorway . A chunk of the popular M25 is set to shut for three days due to engineering work with

The M25 from Junction 10 at Wisley Junction 11 at the A320 Chertsey The motorway is with local diversions set to be in place. However, has suggested the timing could not be worse with thousands of football fans likely to hit the road on Friday evening.

England are playing host to Albania with a sell-out crowd expected to see Thomas Tuchel's first game in charge of the Three Lions.

RAC Breakdown spokesperson Alice Simpson explained: "This weekend's M25 closures could present a 'red card' for drivers heading home from Wembley Stadium on Friday night.

"With junctions 10 to 11 shutting at 9pm, just before the sold-out England game finishes, heavy congestion is almost inevitable for those travelling back to Sussex and Surrey.

"We encourage football fans to seek alternative routes where possible or use public transport to minimise queuing in traffic.

"The same advice applies to anyone using the M25 to visit London for the weekend or holidaymakers heading to Gatwick and Heathrow, both of which are easier to travel to by car."

has stressed motorists travelling clockwise will be diverted at junction 10, joining the A3 northbound.

Motorists will then need to take the A245 and the A320 before re-joining the motorway at junction 11. Those travelling anti-clockwise will be diverted onto the A320 southbound.

Drivers will then need to take the A245 to Painshill before re-joining the M25 at junction 10. National Highways suggested that road users may be able to avoid the road closure by taking the M25 via the Dartford Crossing.

Alice said road users should plan their journey before leaving and allow extra time to factor in possible delays.

She added: "It's absolutely essential that drivers follow the official diversion routes, rather than relying solely on their sat navs, to avoid being led off-course.

"Plan your route before you set off, leave even earlier than usual and make sure your vehicle is road-ready, checking your oil and coolant levels and ensuring your tyres are properly inflated."
