Barclays has warned customers about a regular review letter it sends out to all customers with a certain account.

The issue came to light as a customer contacted the bank over social media as they were having an issue with their credit limit.

They said: "After the online system didn't work twice, I went into branch - I've now been sent an email to say my credit limit is staying at £200.

"You charge me £20 monthly just to have the card and I have a great credit score and decent income! How does that make any sense!?"

Barclays responded to apologise for the upset but assured the customer that it is routine procedure for credit limits to be reviewed.

The bank said: "We regularly carry out reviews on all our Barclaycard accounts to help make sure the credit limit you have is correct and affordable.

"In the event this isn't the case we may take action to reduce this to make sure you're not left in any financial detriment."

on the Barclays website explains that Barclays usually reduced a person's credit limit "because of how you're using your Barclaycard or credit from other lenders".

Reasons for a reduction in your limit can include:

  • Multiple missed payments
  • Going over your credit limit
  • Making low repayments to pay off your balance
  • Making a high number of cash-like transactions
  • Applying for multiple new types of credit in a short space of time
  • Being made bankrupt or having a history of County Court Judgements (CCJs)

In response to the customer, Barclays went on to explain how the person could dispute the outcome of the review: "If for any reason you believe our decision isn't correct, or you have evidence you'd like to submit to help verify why your credit limit shouldn't be changed the letter will provide you with all the next steps on how to appeal our decision."

The bank told the customer it reviews any appeals and further details that the customer to provides, to ensure any decision is "fairly justified".

If Barclays decides to lower your limit, you will receive a letter about this, with the new limit taking effect three days after the date on the letter.

You can apply for a credit limit increase but this can take several months to be processed.

The Barclays website explains: "You may want to use this time to improve your credit score.

"This will significantly improve your chance of being approved for your next increase."
