However, the near 90-minute finale is a box of revelations before the perpetrator is ultimately unmasked. It could lead to a fair bit of head-scratching as the show is chock-full of red herrings, reiterated explanations and even misleading theories that eventually don't hold much water, reports .

So, what exactly transpired during the State Dinner?Who is the murderer? Brace yourselves, as what follows are major spoilers for the entire series of The Residence. If you wish to preserve any element of surprise, it's advised to watch it before proceeding with this article.

As stated earlier, the final episode of the series clocks in at nearly an hour and a half. There's a lot of revisiting past events, more toggling between timelines and even an extended face-off where Detective Cordelia Cupp finally unmasks the killer.

To add to the complexity, the narrative unfolds in reverse. The opening scenes recapitulate most of what we're already privy to. The opening trails A. B. Wynter, portrayed by Giancarlo Espositio, as he carries out his duties as Head Usher of the White House. He has a number of disagreements with different staff members before he is eventually murdered.

Let's cut to the chase rather than list all the repeated theories, questions and claims that lead to the show's 34-minute scene in the Yellow Oval Room to get the final answer. The murderer was Lily Schumacher, the White House Social Secretary.

Although Lily tries to pass the blame onto engineer Bruce and cleaner Elsyie. However, her tale involves her claiming she helped cover it up. Despite the pair staying silent during her story, it remains completely unbelievable.

Lily initially tried to poison A. B. but realising he hadn't drank enough to kill him, threw a vase which missed so hit him over the head with an antique clock instead. She hid the murder weapon in a storage space between the room and another bedroom.

Despite being told about the pocket doors, for some reason Detective Cupp does not explore enough to find it on the first night. She only grows suspicious about it after a work order is issued to seal the doors which is completed by her next visit.

Lily attempted to make out as if the President's husband ordered it. But considering it was already revealed she moved paintings and so much other furniture around since the night of the murder, it's a bit obvious it was really her.

What muddled the entire investigation, led viewers astray and caused Lily's genuine concern on the night was the body being moved. In fact, it was relocated several times.

Bruce the engineer shifts it thinking Elsyie killed him, first to the Lincoln Bedroom where Kylie Minogue discovered the blood then to room 301. The President's brother Tripp wakes up next to the body in there and moves him again to where he was found in the game room.

Tripp finds Bruce's keys in the room too and slips them into Wynter's pocket believing them to be his. He also pilfers the pastry chef's knife and uses it to slash Wynter's wrists. This is after he stumbles upon what he believes is the suicide note and somehow thinks this will support that. The motive for these acts is quite peculiar as is the fact he confesses it to a random house staff member.

Lily's actual motives for murder are eventually revealed although one is mostly conjecture. Cupp asserts that Lily essentially despises the concept of The White House as an institution. Wynter, on the other hand, adored it and its traditions so Lily detested him enough to kill him,.

In reality, though, Wynter deduced that she was siphoning money directly from the White House budgets and violated multiple criminal statutes and ethical codes along the way. Cupp discloses it was all documented in his journal. Although somehow Cupp deciphered this and still didn't know who the killer was.

After disclosing to the Congressional hearing's private session that she has cracked the case and Lily is the suspect in custody, Cupp opts for a detour before her flight for some additional birdwatching. She makes a pit stop at the White House and converses with the President's mother-in-law, revealing the identity of the killer.

She guesses it correctly on her first try, making Cupp appear slightly foolish, but it doesn't deter her from unabashedly bragging about being the world's best detective. We don't witness her exit from the residence though.

Instead, she heads to the game room where the body was found and takes another look around. The camera then retreats, soaring out the window before a falcon is spotted perched on the house, flying towards the camera. A falcon is one of the birds mentioned on President Roosevelt's List of Birds that Cupp possesses in episode one.

There's no cliffhanger hinting at a second season. However, much like Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc, it wouldn't be a shock if Cupp was given a sequel, armed with a brand new mystery to unravel.

The Resident is streaming on Netflix.
