labelled his performance as 'poor' following his shock exit from the Miami Open at the hands of David Goffin. The Spaniard was dumped out of the competition in his opening match, making 42 unforced errors in a disastrous display for the 21-year-old.
Goffin started slowly before securing a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 success, remaining calm throughout as he put the second seed to the sword. Speaking after his defeat, Alcaraz made it no secret that he was incredibly disappointed in his own performance and blamed himself for the defeat.
He said: "It was a poor level from me. I just wanted to play better. After the first set, I thought I was going to be better. He played well, he played good tennis. My level didn't increase.
"I didn't play well, physically I didn't feel well. When you don't have the confidence of your level physically, I think it's really tough to maintain good tennis.
"I didn't feel well in my legs. I wasn't injured, I wasn't sick. I was feeling perfectly (fine) before the match. I felt good, a little bit nervous, which is normal before the match. But nothing more than that. I just felt ready, I thought that I was going to play really good tennis. It didn't happen."
The defeat marks the first time this season that Alcaraz has been beaten by a rival outside of the Top 30 of the ATP rankings, and in doing so, he sacrificed a great opportunity to move up the rankings himself.
If Alcaraz had been able to emulate his 2022 triumph in Miami, he could have snatched the No. 2 spot from Alexander Zverev if the German had been knocked out in the early stages.
Goffin was overjoyed to have booked his spot in the third round, and he was keen to soak up the moment following the success.
He said: "It feels amazing. Sometimes some matches are tough and you have to fight, like the first round, and you're happy to have a second round like that in a stadium. That's why I continue to play tennis, to have that kind of match in a stadium, to play some good tennis.
"[I was] just trying to enjoy the moment... I felt that physically I was ready to fight and then I was feeling the ball really well, so it's the kind of night that you feel great and you're happy to fight, you enjoy every point and at the end, it's a perfect end with a great match point.
