IPL 2025: Veteran Indian batsman Ajinkya Rahane, who commanded Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2025, created history on Saturday (March 22). He has become the first Indian player to captain three different teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Rahane played his 26th IPL match as captain in the opening match of IPL 2025 played between KKR and Royal Challengers Bangalore at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Earlier, he has captained 24 matches for Rajasthan Royals during Rising Pune Supergiant (RPSG) and 2018-2019 for a match in 2017.
So far only three foreign players in the history of IPL-Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Steve Smith have captained different teams. Sangakkara led 13 matches for Punjab Kings in 2010, 25 matches for Deccan Chargers and nine matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013.

Former Australian captain Steve Smith captained a match for Pune Warriors India in IPL 2012, 27 matches for Rajasthan Royals and 15 matches for Rising Pune Supergiants. At the same time, Mahela Jayawardene led a match for Punjab Kings in 2010, 13 matches for Kochi Tuskers Kerala in 2011 and 16 matches for Delhi Capitals in two sessions of 2012-2013.
IPL 2024 winning captain Shreyas Iyer will field for Punjab Kings on Tuesday (March 25) and will join this special list with Ajinkya Rahane. Iyer has previously captained 41 IPL matches for Delhi Capitals in three sessions and 29 matches for Kolkata Knight Riders in two sessions of 2022 and 2024.
The 30 -year -old right -handed batsman Iyer was bought by the franchise in Mohali for Rs 26.75 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction. He is the only captain to play the final with two different franchises in IPL history and will try to become the first captain to win the title with two teams this season.
