New Delhi: Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat Mayank Bhai Nayak has urged the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation to introduce direct air connectivity between Mehsana and Mumbai under the Centre’s regional connectivity scheme, UDAN. In a letter addressed to Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol, Nayak stressed the need to revive air services in Mehsana to boost trade, tourism and regional development in north Gujarat.

Calling Mehsana a key industrial and commercial hub, Nayak said the city and surrounding districts have long required better air connectivity. “Mehsana is not only the home district of our Hon’ble Prime Minister but also a vital economic centre in North Gujarat,” Nayak wrote in the letter dated March 20. “The oil and gas industries, dairy sector, agriculture, and various business activities contribute significantly to the region’s economy.”

Boost to regional connectivity

Nayak pointed out that regular flights between Mehsana and Mumbai would benefit not just the city, but also nearby districts such as Patan and Banaskantha. “This service would be of great benefit to traders, students, tourists and the general public,” he said, adding that better connectivity would pave the way for “comprehensive social and economic development.”

The MP has requested the ministry to give priority to this proposal and initiate the process of launching daily flights between the two cities under the UDAN scheme, which aims to enhance regional air connectivity by making air travel affordable and widespread.

Demand for direct flights

“Your positive action will prove immensely beneficial for lakhs of citizens in the region,” Nayak wrote, urging the government to act swiftly on the matter. At present, Mehsana does not have a functional commercial airport, and residents often have to rely on Ahmedabad for air travel. A direct Mehsana-Mumbai service, Nayak said, would save time and offer a significant boost to local industries and tourism.
