The grass is waking up after a long winter and may look a little tired. It can be reinvigorated by doing scarification. The task of scarification should ideally be done with a spring tine rake or scarification rake.
It requires us to rake the lawn to remove as much thatch and as possible. This allows light and air to reach the living grass. The lawn will benefit greatly from this job and be happier in spring and summer.
Once you have raked the lawn, it will leave you with small heaps of thatch and moss; simply place this into your green waste.
Do not put the heaps on your compost heap if you are creating compost and mulch, as the moss can spread elsewhere. Scarification will improve the health of existing grass and allow you to tend to excessive amounts of moss.
The scarification rake I am using on my lawn is specifically designed for this job; it will lift the thatch and moss while also encouraging more grass by cutting roots to create new grass leaves.
The scarification rake is easy to use and forms part of our lawn care tool collection. Once we have scarified the lawn, we can look to sow new grass seed into any thin and bare patches.
