Garud Puran: Garud Puran is one of the eighteen Mahapuranas, which is related to Vaishnavism and tells about the movement of the soul after death and the results based on the deeds. This is a Mahapuran related to the Vaishnav sect. In Sanatan Dharma, it is believed to provide salvation after death. Therefore, in Sanatan Hindu religion, there is a provision of listening to Garud Puran after death. The presiding deity of this Purana is Lord Vishnu.
Garud Puran was composed after Agni Puran. The content of this Purana is not the same as described in Indian literature for Purana. The information described in this Purana was heard by Garud from Lord Vishnu and then narrated to Kashyap Rishi.
The first part mentions the methods of Vishnu Bhakti and Upasana and there is a provision of listening to 'Garuda Purana' after death. The second part describes the Preta Kalpa in detail and tells the story of the soul falling into various hells. It describes in detail what happens to a human after death, in what type of wombs he is born, how can one be freed from the ghost womb, how should Shraddha and Pitra Karma be performed and how can one get salvation from the terrible sufferings of hells, etc.
According to Garuda Purana, the sufferings of a person who commits suicide do not end, rather his problems increase. The person who commits suicide on earth does not get a place in the afterlife and his soul keeps wandering. Garuda Purana writes about the world after life. How justice is meted out to a human on the basis of his deeds after living on earth, all these things are described in detail in Garuda Purana. Apart from this, Garuda Purana also has things related to devotion to Lord Vishnu. It describes the glory of knowledge, detachment and good conduct. Along with this, the importance of auspicious deeds like selfless work, yagya, charity, penance and pilgrimage is also explained. Garuda Purana also writes about suicide or ending one's own life. Suicide is placed in the category of premature death. Come, let's know what is written in Garuda Purana about suicide.
7 cycles remain incomplete due to premature death
According to Garuda Purana, those who complete all the 7 cycles of their life get salvation after death but if someone leaves even one cycle incomplete, then he has to face premature death. Such a soul has to suffer a lot. According to Garuda Purana, dying of hunger, dying of violence, hanging, burning in fire, dying of snake bite, drinking poison or committing suicide by hanging, all these come under the category of premature death. This means that these deaths happen before time.
Suicide is placed in the category of sin
Human life on earth is very difficult to get. This life is the fruit of penance. If someone commits suicide, he has to suffer hell. It is believed that not everyone gets the opportunity to be born as a human. When a human dies and becomes a spirit, he is sent to 13 different places. If someone commits suicide, he is sent to one of the 7 hells. There he has to spend about 60,000 years.
The soul of a person who commits suicide keeps wandering
Souls usually take another body in 3 to 40 days but the souls of those who commit suicide keep wandering for a long time. Suicide is described as an insult to God in Garuda Purana, therefore, those who commit suicide do not get a place in heaven or hell. They remain stuck between the world and the afterlife.
The soul of those who commit suicide suffers even after death
It is said that people have to face sorrows in life. One has to struggle to live life on earth but according to Garuda Purana, the soul of a person who commits suicide has to suffer even after death. His soul remains restless and even after death, he keeps thinking about the struggles of life, love, sorrow etc. A person who commits suicide remains only a wandering soul.
