There is very good news for the students studying 12th from the CBSE board. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has approved the use of basic calculators for the Accountancy paper in the 12th board examination to be held in the 2025-26 academic session. Students will be able to use calculators in the upcoming 12th board accountancy examination. The decision was confirmed during the 140th Governing Body Meeting held in December 2023, the minutes of which were recently made public.
According to the proposal, students will be allowed to use non-programmable calculators with limited functions, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentage calculations. The board will issue specific guidelines on acceptable calculator models to ensure uniformity and prevent the use of advanced or programmable devices. CBSE has taken this decision in support of the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes the development of thinking skills of students.
Why was the calculator allowed in the exam?
By allowing calculators, the board aims to reduce the cognitive load on students, allowing them to focus more on analytical and conceptual responses rather than manual calculations. At present, students with special needs have been allowed to use calculators in CBSE Board 10th and 12th examinations. For more information in this regard, you can visit the official website of CBSE.
In contrast, the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) has allowed 12th students to use calculators from 2021. The use of calculators in accountancy examinations is expected to make the examination process easier for students, helping them focus on understanding and applying concepts rather than doing lengthy calculations manually.
