Mira Bhayandar: Officials from the cyber cell attached to the Mira Bhayandar-Vasai Virar (MBVV) police helped in recovering Rs 8.81 lakh out of the total Rs 29.80 lakh, which a 52-year-old Mira Road resident had lost to online fraud.

About The Case

The cyber cell received a complaint from a local resident that he had fallen prey to the evil designs of cyber criminals who had posted advertisements on social media platforms offering tutorials and investment tips by impersonating a reputed stock broking and portfolio management company in December 2024.

In his complaint registered on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCCRP), the victim stated that he transferred Rs 29.80 lakh via multiple transactions to bank accounts specified by the fraudsters. However, he neither received any profit nor his investment. The cyber cell, led by police inspector Sujitkumar Gunjkar, started investigations and identified the bank accounts in which the ill-gotten wealth had been parked.

After continuous follow-ups with the concerned banks, the team managed to freeze Rs 8.81 lakh out of the total Rs 29.80 lakh. The amount was reversed to the bank accounts of the complainants' account following orders from the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Thane. The cyber cell handed over a symbolic cheque to the complainant confirming the reversal.

With the latest recoveries, the MBVV police have managed to revert more than Rs.1.5 crore lost by complainants in various cases of cyber-frauds in the first three months of 2025. Stressing upon the need to be careful while dealing with unknown callers/senders and to lodge complaint as soon as possible (Golden Hour), the cyber cops said that people can contact the local police stations or directly approach or call the cybercrime cell on 1930 with an additional option of reporting online frauds through email at  or on the NCCRP.
