Veteran sports voice Jim Nantz has come up with a succinct but powerful three-word phrase that he plans to use for Rory McIlroy if the golfer claims victory at the Masters next week: "Glory for Rory." The Northern Irishman is fired up to break his long-standing major championship drought as he graces the greens of Augusta, seeking his first title since his double major triumph in 2014. McIlroy's major quest began with his US Open win in 2011 and now, after years of anticipation, a win at Augusta would complete his career grand slam.
Yet, despite this run of near-misses, McIlroy heads into next weekend with optimism brewing as he's found top-tier form, which includes two PGA Tour wins this year and an impressive T5 finish at last week's Texas Children's Houston Open.
With all eyes set on the Masters 2025, Nantz, appearing on the "Dan Patrick Show" recently, nodded to Patrick's phrase "Glory for Rory", indicating that those just might be the words heralding McIlroy's potential historic achievement.
"That's not bad... I'm gonna tell you right now, glory for Rory, if he wins next week, it may not be the final putt call, but it will be said somewhere from the end of the competition to when we sign off the air," Nantz declared. "Glory for Rory, I will be channeling you Dan at the moment, you have my word right now, if McIlroy wins, I'm gonna say something about glory for Rory."
The revered voice of the Masters, Jim Nantz, who has anchored CBS's coverage since '86, with leadership from '89, is edging towards his golden years at 65.
Golf aficionados tuning in for CBS's upcoming Masters broadcast should keep their ears perked up for the poetic promise of "glory for Rory" should McIlroy crest the leaderboard this time around.
Rory McIlroy's brush with Augusta greatness came last year, clinching second. With seven top-10 Masters finishes, four topping top five, and no clear frontrunner this season, McIlroy might just capture that long-desired Masters title.
