Weeds spread quickly in spring and are often seen popping up through cracks in or , but dealing with them now will stop them from being a nuisance throughout the year. One of the worst places weeds can grow is on gravel, as the weeds can bury themselves deep into the ground and become incredibly difficult to dig out.
However, you do not have to waste time handpicking these pesky or spending money on pricy killers to get rid of them for good. Mars, a gardener and co-founder of , has shared that there is a better and more natural way to get rid of weeds that costs as little as £1.
Mars said: "We've tried natural remedies in the past that weren't successful, and after some experimentation, we've settled on a recipe that has been very effective in killing the most common weeds on our driveway: grass, dandelions and daisies that have self-seeded."
He added: "Our ingredients to make one litre (buying the vinegar, salt and washing up liquid from Tesco) costs about £1. That is a massive saving and a cheap way to kill weeds."
White vinegar is one of the most effective ways to kill weeds as it contains acetic acid, which can break down plant matter. Salt, on the other hand, draws moisture out of plants, and high concentrations will stop it from being able to retain water to kill it.
However, a big issue with using vinegar and salt is that they cannot easily penetrate plant leaves and cannot reach the roots, so weeds can simply come back.
This is why washing-up liquid is essential when getting rid of weeds. It acts as a surfactant to ensure the solution sticks to the weed and gets into any nook or cranny.
Washing-up liquid, salt and white vinegar mixed together make a very powerful weed killer. They will get rid of weeds, making your property tidier and easier to manage for the rest of the year.
You will need:
Method:
You need only mix all the ingredients together and then place them in a spray bottle or pressure sprayer to make it easy to apply.
Give the solution a good shake to mix everything up, and then wait until noon. This is the warmest part of the day, and the sun will speed up the weed killer's effects.
Spray the weeds directly until they are completely drenched, but be careful not to get any of the solution on your grass or flowerbeds.
This potent weed killer will not discriminate between beloved plants and pesky weeds, so be careful when spraying it around your garden, as it can run off.
Be aware that white vinegar has quite a potent smell, and you will be able to smell it a few hours after applying the solution. Do not use this solution on a day you are using your barbecue or want to spend time relaxing in your garden.
After 48 hours, the weeds will have wilted and dried out. This solution is best applied in spring as it is most effective against new growth, but if any older weeds survive, then just apply again, and it will eventually kill them all off.
