New Delhi : In the calendar year 2024, the unemployment rate in persons of 15 years or above has come down from 5 percent to 4.9 percent in 2023. This information has been given in the periodic labor force survey i.e. PLFS released on Wednesday.
The Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation has said in a statement that the slight decline in overall unemployment in rural areas has come down from 4.3 percent to 4.2 percent, with a slight softness for both men and women. Men unemployment in urban areas increased from 6.0 percent to 6.1 percent but the female unemployment declined from 8.9 percent to 8.2 percent. Due to this, the overall urban unemployment rate remained stable at 6.7 percent.
In the calendar year 2024 at the all -India level, the unemployment rate was 4.9 percent with a slight decline as compared to 5.0 percent in the year 2023. This reflects a slight improvement in employment opportunities. The statement said that due to decrease in the number of unpaid estate in domestic companies, there has been a decline in LFPR i.e. labor force participation ratio with WPR i.e. labor population ratio among rural women.
The percentage of 'Assistants in domestic enterprises' fell from 19.9 percent in 2023 to 18.1 percent in 2024. All categories, especially in urban areas, saw a slight improvement in the overall WPR i.e. 47.0 percent to 47.0 percent, while the overall WPR at the all India level increased from relatively unchanged ie from 53.4 percent to 53.5 percent.

The increase in LFPR for men in urban areas ranged from 74.3 percent to 75.6 percent in 2023 and a slight increase for women i.e. 25.5 percent to 25.8 percent, which led to a comprehensive increase in LFPR i.e. 50.3 percent to 51.0 percent. LFPR means the percentage of population that is either employed or looking for employment. According to the statement, the overall LFPR remained stable at 56.2 percent despite the minor variations in various categories.
