Expert Geoffrey Munn spoke to a guest who found a piece of jewellery while .

The owner shared: "I was planting some tomatoes and there it was on the ground."

“So I picked it up and thought ‘this is from a Christmas cracker’, put it in my pocket.

“When I got into the house, I took it out of my pocket and it was nice and shiny so I thought it’s obviously not out of a cracker.

“Had it for a few years and took it to a jeweller in the promenade in Cheltenham who said that he thought it was probably a Victorian copy of a Roman ring and have kept it in a drawer ever since.”

Munn commented: “Wow, how marvellous. And in actual fact, it came out of the ground as it went into the ground and it went into the ground six or 700 years ago.”

The guest exclaimed “good golly” before Munn continued: “And it laid there, waiting for you to bring it into the light again.

"Gold's absolutely incorruptible, it never tarnishes, it remains the same and indeed the tiny stone set in the top remains the same, because it is a sapphire, it is a cabochon sapphire."

The expert explained that it had "travelled across Arabia and towards Europe" and shared that such a ring was likely worn by "type of ring often worn by men of the cloth, because the substrate of Christianity was old magic."

He further detailed: "And they were men of status and of some wealth and they could afford these things, it was before the dissolution of the monasteries."

Munn then said, clearly impressed: "A stunning, stunning object. Most unusual for you to have found it without the use of a metal detector."

When the guest mentioned he stumbled upon it while gardening, the expert responded with a grin, "Just gardening. So you pulled up the roots and you found a medieval ring and this is enviable beyond belief. I mean, this is terribly, terribly exciting."

However, there was an important piece of advice from Munn who disclosed: "You was told it was a Victorian ring so there wasn't actually an obligation for you to report this to the authorities at that time."

"I never thought about it," claimed the owner.

Munn replied: "No and perfectly understandably but now there is an obligation and it's important you check in with your museums to make sure it isn't treasure trove.

"That's extremely unlikely because it was found on its own but it is something you might like to do -".

The guest interrupted with a smile: "I do. I did look more," prompting laughter from Munn and the crowd.

Munn laughed: "You did look more? Did you go deep enough?", which was met with the guest's lighthearted admission of "double digging".

Heeding Munn's advice, "No I mean this is really magical stuff but you do need to report it even now.

"Anybody finding precious metal, anybody finding interesting old things."

He emphasised the importance of reporting such finds to the Portable Antiquities Scheme for official recording.

The moment of truth came with Munn's appraisal, revealing: "This is an intensely valuable ring. There's president for this sort of ring, fetching £8,000 and £9,000 at auction today."

An audible reaction from the onlookers followed the guest's astonished response: "Good golly. Wow. A few hundred of scrap gold, I would have thought."

Munn then delivered the final say: "Yes, nothing in scrap gold and everything in context."

Antiques Roadshow is available to watch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
