Italy is famous for its fabulous food but there's one spot that punches above its weight. For the perfect foodie getaway, you need to have Florence on your itinerary. This incredible city is the capital of Tuscany and thousands of tourists flock there every year for its amazing art, architecture and of course, its food.

With eight Michelin-starred restaurants in the city and even more mentioned in the Michelin guide, you are spoiled for choice when it comes to where to eat. Legendary establishments like the twice-Michelin-starred Santa Elisabetta and the three-time-Michelin-starred Enoteca Pinchiorri are unmissable if you have the time and the money to experience them.

In theMichelin guide, Enoteca Pinchiorri is described as "legendary".

They said: "What was originally a simple wine bar with a kitchen has become one of the great Italian restaurants par excellence.

"The dining room is adorned with paintings and frescoes and boasts the type of historic elegance that is typical of Florence, while in the kitchen Riccardo Monco delights guests with his dishes which impress without becoming overly fussy or excessive, so that the intense flavours shine through and remain long in the memory."

At Santa Elisabetta chef Rocco De Santis creates "elaborate and imaginative Mediterranean cuisine with a focus on fish and seafood", according to the guide which calls the restaurant "excellent".

If you are visiting Florence, make sure you sample some of the food it's most famous for. According to the Michelin guide, Florence makes some of the finest pâté in the world using scraps of chicken liver, rich salty butter and capers.

Keep an eye out for traditional restaurants who take care in preparing this antipasto with high quality ingredients. Some of the best places are Cibrèo or Il Latini, hidden off a tiny street near the main train station in the city.

Florence is also home to a pasta shape known as pici - thick hand-rolled noodles that make the perfect accompaniment to heavier sauces.

Pici is traditionally served with one of three sauces: aglione (a tomato sauce flavoured with rich Tuscan garlic, a meat ragu or con le briciole (tossed with breadcrumbs that have been toasted with garlic and chilli.
