Tennis star Jelena Ostapenko has proven to be a controversial figure on several occasions. The former French Open winner is competing in women's doubles at Wimbledon and is preparing for a quarter-final clash on Tuesday. However, she has already created headlines through her conduct at the All England Club this summer.
Ostapenko was quizzed about her outfit as she walked onto the court alongside her doubles partner Hsieh Su-wei ahead of their second round match last week. After being approached by umpire Jamie Crowson, the 28-year-old threw her hands out in frustration before lifting up her skirt to show that she was wearing green undershorts, which complied with the dress code after a slight tweak to the all-white clothing policy for female competitors in 2023. However, it is far from the first time that Ostapenko's behaviour on the court has been questioned. The former Wimbledon semi-finalist had another memorable run-in with an umpire last year.
Ostapenko called for umpire Julie Kjnedlie to be banned from her future matches after suffering a quarter-final defeat to Victoria Azarenka at the 2024 Brisbane International. The controversial incident occurred when the deciding set was level at 4-4. Ostapenko believed her drop shot had bounced twice after hitting the net, leading the current world No. 21 to lambast the official.
"You are blind," Ostapenko said. "It is impossible to play when you make so much mistakes. I never want you at my match again. You will never be at my match. I don't want you at my matches, you ruin my matches."
Ostapenko still shook hands with Azarenka after the match, but there would be tension between them just a month later when they met at the Qatar Open. Azarenka recorded a straight-sets victory in Doha, much to Ostapenko's frustration, who offered an outstretched racket instead of a customary handshake. Bemused by Ostapenko's attempt at sportsmanship, Azarenka waved away her racket.
The Latvian star also has a history of memorable moments at Wimbledon. In 2021, Ostapenko was accused of feigning injury during her third-round defeat to Ajla Tomljanovic. Ostapenko had called for a medical timeout while 4-0 down in the third set, with her Australian opponent questioning her actions.
"I have been in situations where players use that medical timeout to get their opponent off, usually when they are losing badly," Tomljanovic said."I know when someone is injured and when someone is not. She can say she was injured - I don't think she was."

However, Ostapenko denied those claims. "She cannot say anything because she knows zero about my injury," Ostapenko argued. "I thought it was very, very disrespectful from her side, because every single player who is playing tennis or any other sports can get injured."
The following year, she was booed off the court at SW19 after throwing a water bottle at her chair after a fourth-round loss to Tatjana Maria. During the 2023 Australian Open, tennis icon Caroline Wozniacki revealed her past experience with Ostapenko. "Let's just say I practiced with her once and chose not to do so again," she said while on commentary for Ostapenko's win over Coco Gauff.
Ostapenko suffered a singles loss to Brit Sonny Kartal and lost in the second round of mixed doubles, but will hope to clinch the women's doubles title. The 28-year-old has an impressive pedigree in women's doubles, reaching three Grand Slam finals and winning last year's US Open.
However, she was accused of being "disrespectful" by her opponent during the Abu Dhabi Open in February. Ostapenko was competing alongside Ellen Perez against Timea Babos and Nicole Melichar-Martinez in the quarter-finals and appeared to cut off her opponents as they attempted to switch ends.
Ostapenko traded words with Babos, who then wrote a cryptic post on Instagram in the aftermath. "Some players are just sooo fake and disrespectful," Babos said. "I don't care how good they are or how well they hit the ball; they just have to have respect and manners." Ostapenko and Hsieh will face Sorana Cirstea and Anna Kalinskaya in the Wimbledon women's doubles quarter-finals on Tuesday.
