After a wobbly start in Australia, Akash Deep made a strong comeback to the Indian Test team. He got his first 5 wicket haul and 10 wickets in the match. He and Mohammed Siraj silenced all those who had doubts about the bowling attack especially with Jasprit Bumrah not playing on Wednesday morning. India won their first Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham as England struggled to chase the runs scored by Shubman Gill and the Indian captain along with the bowlers especially Akash Deep.

Akash Deep now holds the record for the best bowling figures by an Indian bowler in Tests in England. He’s only the second Indian to take 10 wickets in a match in England, after Chetan Sharma 39 years ago. Akash Deep’s 6/99 was also the 7th best bowling figures for an Indian bowler in an innings. He’s the 8th bowler to take 6 wickets in an innings for India in an England Test, joining the likes of Bishan Singh Bedi, Amar Singh, BS Chandrasekhar, Chetan Sharma, Dilip Doshi, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Siraj who had achieved the feat earlier in the first innings.

Here are the best bowling figures by an Indian bowler in Tests in England:

Akash Deep – 10/187 vs England – Birmingham, 2025

Chetan Sharma – 10/188 vs England – Birmingham, 1986

Jasprit Bumrah – 9/110 vs England – Nottingham, 2021

Zaheer Khan – 9/134 vs England – Nottingham, 2007

Akash Deep got the ball to swing more than any other fast bowler and created opportunities for India in both innings. Siraj led the attack well and their partnership was great. 20 wickets on that pitch was a tough ask and they both did it, taking 17 wickets between them.

Shubman Gill set up the win by scoring 430 runs in the match, the 2nd highest by a player in a match. The two bowlers responded well. Now England has many questions to answer about their team and how they play.
