India’s electric vehicle (EV) adoption continues to rise steadily, especially in the three-wheeler segment. In June 2025, more than 60% of all three-wheelers sold across the country were electric, as per data from the Federation of Indian Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). This marks a significant jump from 55.5% during the same month last year, highlighting growing consumer preference for eco-friendly and cost-efficient transport options.

The rise in EV penetration isn’t limited to three-wheelers. Electric two-wheelers accounted for 7.3% of June’s total two-wheeler sales, up from 6% a year ago. Electric passenger vehicles also saw a jump in market share, rising from 2.5% to 4.4% year-on-year. In the commercial vehicle segment, EV share doubled from 0.8% to 1.6%. Even construction equipment, where EV usage has been negligible so far, showed signs of change with a 0.1% share.

Auto retail across all vehicle segments remained strong, with total sales crossing 2 million units in June, up 5% from the previous year. The first half of 2025 saw over 6.5 million vehicles sold, including more than 1 million electric vehicles—a 17% growth compared to the same period in 2024. The three-wheeler category alone saw over 3.6 lakh electric units sold between January and June.

Industry experts credit the surge to rising fuel costs, state and central government incentives, better awareness, and improved charging and battery-swapping infrastructure. With this momentum, India’s transition to electric mobility—especially in last-mile transportation—appears to be on a solid path.
