An important initiative has been taken to make public transport more smooth and safe for women and transgender community in Delhi. Now, Delhi -based women and transgenders of Delhi will be able to travel free in Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and cluster buses using ‘Saheli Samart Card’ and transgender ‘Saheli Samart Card’.

This card will be completely digital, which will include the name and photo of the card holder. According to PTI, this smart card will be issued under the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) and it will replace the currently prevalent pink paper based ticket.

Free travel only in DTC and Cluster Buses

Although this card will only be valid for free travel in DTC and cluster buses, it will be necessary to top-up the card to use other public transport services. To avail this scheme, women of Delhi will have to register online on the DTC portal, select a participant bank, and then go to the respective branch and complete the KYC process.

These documents will be required

Applicants will have to submit Aadhaar card, PAN card, residence proof, passport size photo and other KYC documents sought by the bank to get the card. Once the KYC process is completed, the card will be sent to the registered address by the concerned bank. If the card is lost, the applicant will have to inform the bank, after which a duplicate card can be issued as per the conditions of the bank.

The Delhi government says that the ‘Saheli Smart Card’ will introduce a new digital revolution for women and transgenders, which will not only transport transport, but it will also become paperless and more secure. Although the government will not charge any fee for the journey, a minor fee can be charged by the bank for issuing or maintaining cards. It will be necessary to activate it with DTC’s Automatic Fair Collection System (AFCs) before starting the card using.
