Answer:

Sweets are not only linked to weight gain and diabetes but are also considered a major threat to kidney health. A diet high in sugar can trigger metabolic disorders and obesity—key risk factors for type 2 diabetes. Both diabetes and metabolic issues are common causes of blood vessel damage, including the vessels that supply blood to the kidneys, which significantly increases the risk of chronic kidney failure.

Consuming large amounts of glucose also increases sodium absorption in the small intestine, leading to a buildup of salt in the body. This forces the kidneys to work harder to eliminate the excess salt, which over time can contribute to kidney stress.

Additionally, sugar inhibits the production of nitric oxide (NO), a compound that helps blood vessels relax and dilate. A high-sugar diet can cause blood vessels to constrict, raising blood pressure and promoting kidney disease. This can accelerate the progression of chronic kidney failure. Specifically, fructose can increase calcium and oxalate levels in urine, promoting the formation of calcium oxalate crystals, which can lead to kidney stones. If left undiagnosed, these stones may obstruct the urinary tract and severely impair kidney function.

To protect kidney health, it is advisable to limit the intake of sugary products like sodas, bubble tea, bottled fruit juices, sweets, chocolate, cookies, and sugary snacks. Additionally, dried fruits, canned fruits, and packaged condiments should be consumed with caution due to their potential high sugar content.

Instead, opt for fruits that are low in sugar, such as limes, passion fruit, oranges, grapefruits, apples, and papayas. To further support kidney health, reduce daily sugar intake, maintain a healthy weight, control blood sugar and blood pressure, exercise regularly, avoid smoking, and limit alcohol consumption.
