If you have come to Lucknow and have not stopped for a moment after seeing this magnificent door standing near the big Imambara, then your journey is incomplete. it is Rumi doorAnd it is not just a brick-stone building, but the identity of Lucknow, its soul. This 60 -foot -high door is a symbol of the city of Lucknow today.

But the story behind making it is more beautiful than its beauty.

When a door expected a hungry city

This story is also of the same era when there was a terrible famine in Awadh and the Nawab Asafuddaula Had started making a big Imambara to provide employment to the people. As part of the same “Grain Instead of Work” campaign, construction of this door was also started in 1784. This door is also a proof of the same mercy of the Nawab, for which the saying was made- “Whoever does not give it, give it to Asafuddaula.”

A piece of Turkish in Lucknow

Do you not feel that its texture is slightly different from common Mughal buildings? This is because this door is a mimic of an old door of Turkish city of Istanbul (that time Constantinopal). The word “Rumi” was also used for Türkiye, hence it was named Rumi Darwaza.

Its upper part of it has an eight -corner umbrella, and it is said that in ancient times a large lamp was burnt on it, which used to add beauty to its beauty at night.

The city’s ‘entry gate’ was once

There was a time when this door used to be the main entrance of the old Lucknow city. That is, if you have داخل ہونا in the city, then you had to pass under its glory. Today, even though the city has spread for miles around it, it is still standing in the heart of Lucknow with the same glory.

Rumi Darwaza is not just a monument, it is a story of Tehzeeb, Nawabi Shan and Humanity of Lucknow that draws every visitor even after centuries.
