Lisbon, September 4 (Read): At least 15 people were killed and 18 others injured after a tram accident in Portugal’s capital, Lisbon, on Wednesday evening.
According to Portugal’s emergency services, the injured include foreign nationals and a child. The accident took place around 6 pm local time when the tram, popular among tourists, went out of control at a curve, collided with a building, and plunged down a hillside.
Authorities confirmed that 15 people lost their lives in the incident, while 18 sustained injuries. The Portuguese government has announced an investigation into the cause of the accident.
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and described the incident as a national tragedy. European Union President Ursula von der Leyen also expressed grief, sharing her condolences in a post on social media platform X.
