England is gearing up to kick off their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 journey against Nepal on February 8, 2026, at the legendary Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. With Harry Brook at the helm, England will once again lean on the seasoned talents of Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, Jofra Archer, and Sam Curran as they aim for a strong start in the tournament.
Having already claimed the T20 World Cup trophy twice, in 2010 and 2022, they enter this tenth edition with a golden chance to make history. With 20 teams vying for the title, England is looking to become the first nation to win the T20 World Cup three times. However, their track record at the Wankhede Stadium has been a bit of a rollercoaster, with mixed results.
England has played four T20Is at the Wankhede, securing two wins and two losses. Their first match there was back in 2012 during their tour of India. In that second T20I, England chased down India’s total of 177/8, winning by six wickets, thanks to Michael Lumb’s 50 and Eoin Morgan’s unbeaten 49.

Their next visit to the venue was during the T20 World Cup 2016, where they faced a six-wicket defeat against the West Indies. Despite posting a solid total of 182/6, England fell short against a stunning unbeaten century from Chris Gayle, who led the West Indies to victory.
Later in that same tournament, England delivered one of the most unforgettable chases in T20 World Cup history at the Wankhede. South Africa set a daunting target of 229/4, bolstered by half-centuries from Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock, and Jean-Paul Duminy. But England rose to the occasion, successfully chasing down the target, largely thanks to Joe Root’s impressive 83.
England's last outing at this venue was against India in 2025, a match they'd probably prefer to erase from memory. India set a formidable score of 247/9, with Abhishek Sharma lighting up the field with a stunning 135 runs. In response, England struggled, getting bowled out for a mere 97, despite Phil Salt's brave effort of 55 runs. As they gear up to return to Wankhede for the 2026 World Cup, England will be looking to make a strong statement and kick off their points tally on a high note.
