Announcement of new rules in IPL 2026

New Delhi: Only two matches have been played so far in the upcoming season of IPL (IPL 2026), but the situation regarding the new rules is gradually becoming clear. This year some new rules have been implemented and some old rules have been amended. a significant change Decision Review System (DRS), the purpose of which is to curb the manipulation of teams. BCCI has added a new provision to the use of DRS, under which the third umpire will examine only those decisions which have been appealed. This means that now only one check will be done on one DRS.

Information about changes in captains meeting

According to Cricbuzz report, a meeting of all 10 captains was held before the start of the new season, in which information about this change was shared. BCCI Head of Match Referee in Javagal Srinath and umpire chief Nitan Menon Explained this new rule in detail to the teams and highlighted how to use it. The actual meaning of this change and the process of its implementation were discussed.

What has changed in DRS?

Till last season, umpires used to conduct other investigations along with appeals in case of DRS referrals. For example, if the fielding team appealed for a catch and it was rejected, the wide ball would also be tested when taking DRS. But this will not happen now. If the fielding team has appealed only for a catch, the TV umpire will give his decision on this only.

If the batsman feels that his bat did not hit the ball and it should have been given a wide, he must make his own appeal to DRS. An important aspect in this process is that the batsman has to do it within the initially given 15 seconds to appeal. No additional 15 seconds will be given for appeal after the TV umpire’s decision.

Changes in rules to concussion

Apart from this, important changes have also been made in some other rules. A major decision relates to concussion substitutes. If a player requires a replacement due to a concussion, a similar player will be included in the squad, selected from the 5 pre-selected impact substitutes. If there is a need to change the wicketkeeper, this responsibility will also be assigned to someone from the squad selected for the same match. If a foreign player is affected by a concussion, then the foreign player will be able to replace him only if there are only 3 foreign players in the playing-11, otherwise only the Indian player will replace him.
